Based on their function and application environment, lightning rods can be categorized into the following main types:

1. Traditional Lightning Rods

Traditional lightning rods are the most basic form of lightning protection device, consisting of a metal conductor and a grounding system. They are primarily used for standard buildings, towers, and similar structures.

2. Early Streamer Emission (ESE) Lightning Rods

As a lightning strike becomes imminent, these rods actively emit ionization pulses to create a discharge path in advance. This enhances their ability to attract lightning and provides a wider protection range, making them suitable for applications requiring high-level lightning protection.

3. Current-Limiting Lightning Rods

These rods effectively control the impact of lightning currents on equipment. They are typically used in specialized locations requiring extra protection, such as communication towers and facilities housing precision equipment.

4. Spherical Lightning Rods

This device utilizes a metal sphere instead of the traditional pointed tip, making it suitable for areas with specific installation requirements.

5. Ionic Lightning Rods

Ionic lightning rods release a stream of ions to form a continuous ionized path, thereby more efficiently channeling lightning current down to the ground.
