A lightning rod is a device designed to protect buildings and other facilities from lightning damage. It operates by utilizing point discharge and the attraction of lightning to rapidly channel high-voltage lightning currents into the ground, thereby preventing the destruction caused by a direct strike.
As a thundercloud approaches the ground, electrostatic induction causes a significant amount of electric charge-opposite in polarity to that of the cloud-to accumulate at the tip of the lightning rod. As the electric field strength intensifies, the air surrounding the tip becomes ionized, creating a conductive path. When a lightning strike occurs, the rod guides the current along a specially designed conductive path to the ground, effectively protecting the building.
