Since lightning rods require a specific installation height to meet protection coverage requirements, lightning rod towers-also known as tower-mounted lightning rods or lightning protection towers-were developed. Common specifications include various types of metal towers, such as the GFL angle-steel tower, GJT round-steel tower, and GH steel-pipe pole tower; Figure 8 illustrates the GFL series angle-steel lightning rod tower.
The protection radius and coverage area of these towers must be calculated using the rolling sphere method.
