Conventional lightning protection is categorized into protection against direct lightning strikes, protection against induced lightning, and comprehensive lightning protection. Lightning protection systems designed to guard against direct strikes generally consist of three components: an air terminal (lightning receptor), a down-conductor, and a grounding electrode. Air terminals come in various forms, such as lightning rods, lightning wires, lightning strips, and lightning meshes. The operating principle of a lightning rod acting as an air terminal is as follows: the rod is connected to the ground via a conductor, establishing an equipotential state with the earth. Due to its height, the rod distorts the electric field of a charged cloud-which is approaching its critical field strength-triggering ionization and the initiation of a downward leader discharge. Under the influence of the intense electric field, the rod produces a "point discharge" that forms an upward leader; the meeting of the upward and downward leaders creates a conductive path for the lightning, allowing the current to discharge safely into the ground and thereby protecting the target structure from a direct strike. In essence, a lightning rod functions as a lightning attractor; it draws in nearby lightning and initiates an early discharge, channeling the lightning current through its grounding conductor to the earth to prevent the protected object from being directly struck.
