As a crucial device for protecting buildings from lightning damage, the working principle of the lightning rod is well understood. It consists primarily of three components: a grounding electrode, a grounding down-conductor, and an air terminal (or lightning receptor). The air terminal-typically a round steel bar or steel pipe measuring 1–2 meters in length and 15–20 millimeters in diameter-is securely mounted atop a support and connected to the grounding electrode via the down-conductor. During stormy weather, high-rise buildings can induce an accumulation of positive charges in response to charged clouds overhead. As a thundercloud approaches the ground, it alters the configuration of the local electric field. At the moment of a lightning strike, immense electrical energy rapidly converts into forms such as light and heat, posing a potential threat of destruction to the building. However, the presence of a lightning rod ensures safety by allowing this energy to travel safely through the air terminal and down-conductor before dissipating harmlessly into the earth.
